Formal upright bonsai design replicates the growth of a tall and straight tree in favorable
natural conditions. The trunk of the tree remains perpendicular and upright to the ground. The trunk gores on reducing in diameter from the base to the tip.

You might have observed some of the trees growing in nature, which have the base and
apex trunk in a line perpendicular to the ground, but the growth in between is slightly
slanted. Such styles are called informal upright.

This is a widely used bonsai style wherein in the plant leans to one side, unlike the
upright design we talked about before. The trunk is inclined at an angle of about 45
degree to the round. The trunk may be straight or curved in this style of trees. Slanting
trunk plants are pretty common in nature and they are forced to take this form owing to
specific survival requirement of the plant. One example is that of the slanting tree trunk
caused due to the plants search for a light source.

The name for broom style bonsai comes from the shape of an inverted Japanese broom.
This style suit deciduous trees and works out great for a lot of tropical plants as well. In
broom style bonsai trees the base of the trunk is straight and the branches grow in all
directions from about the same point on the trunk giving it the shape of an inverted
broom.

Thetip of the plant goes below the roots altitude. In full cascade bonsai, similar it its naturalcounterpart the tip of the plant goes below the root level. There are special pots with good height that are used for full cascade style.
